Prairie Land Food purchasing co-op
Dear Neighbor Ministries coordinates a distribution site for Prairie Land Food, a grocery purchasing co-op serving Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Prairie Land Food is a non-profit organization started in September 2006 which is headquartered in Topeka. In addition to helping participants stretch their grocery dollars, the program promotes volunteer service.
Participants pay $23.50 and volunteer two hours a month to purchase a food package of six frozen meats and six to eight fresh fruits and vegetables at a highly discounted rate. More than one Prairie Pak may be purchased, and “meat only” and “special” packages can be purchased for an additional fee and volunteer hours.
There are no income requirements or other restrictions to participation. Participants can volunteer almost anywhere-babysitting for grandchildren or mowing a neighbor’s lawn would satisfy the volunteer requirement. Participants document their own hours.
